Porto Di Giulianova
Giulianova (TE) Abruzzo - Italia
Important military and cargo stop during the First Punic War, the canal port of Castum Novum Civitas has played a decisive role in the transport system, the economy and politics of the entire Pretuziana region. Over the centuries, relations interference between these factors have led to phases of development and decline, but also to cultural changes thanks to the idea and information exchange that generations of anonymous sailors have circulated together with the cargo. The vocation of the sea, despite the difficulties and the human costs, has been a constant in the lives of our fishermen whose work has always been an indispensable resource for the area. After almost two thousand years, at the middle of the seventeenth century began a long period of crisis and abandonment of harbor structures that ends in the year 1913. Giuseppe de Bartolomei, in fact, the mayor of Giulianova from 1907 to 1922, thanks to the support of the deputy of Giuliese Board, the honorable Roberto de Vito, creates the first brush of the south pier in which in the 20's and in the 30's are added the second brush and several extensions; between the two piers a mouth of about 130 meters wide is created with a depth of about 4-5 meters. In the late 30's the arrangement of the seafront (1937-1962), the inauguration of the fish market at the entrance (1938), our first ichthyic (1939), the construction of public housings and of the Fisherman's House (1939), the first motor fishing boats showing great excitement and vivacity design the echoes of a future development always more and more concentrated on the port system. During the Second World War (1940-1945) the Italian Government confiscates the boats from the Giuliese basin with a capacity exceeding 30 tons to adapt them as minesweeper in the war zones. In 1946 artificial rocks are produced for the renovation and reconstruction labors of the port, severely damaged from bombings. In the following decades the adjustment works of the internal structures of the basin continue with the creation of the shore wharf, while the boats are equipped with sophisticated devices (radar, fathom and computer). In 1973 the Port Authority is established to respond in an organic way to the structural and functional needs of the harbor area for both fishing and yachting activities, in reality, the last one, in continuous growth, directly connected to the touristic policies of the territory. In the 80's and the 90's the Port Authority, in fact, designs and builds the adjustment of the entrance of the port basin, the marina, the widening of the bank dock, of its operational yard and of the north pier. In this period the Giuliese fishing fleet, numerous and well equipped, becomes part of the ten Italian fishing communities with an annual catch of about 30,000 q.li, a turnover of about 20 billion old liras and a direct and induced employment of about 2,000 working units. They made the service center for the fishing port and for the tourist port, equipped with functional hydro-electric and fire protection systems. Today the Port Authority, in addition to the institutional activities, promotes events for economic, tourist and cultural development of the territory in synergy with the Public Authorities and the private companies. The knowledge of the history, the traditions, of the local products and development of the human and institutional resources present in social fabric become a target and together with growth driver for the whole collective.
