Most recently, under the impulse of S.A.S II Ranieri Prince III, in the 70's studies have been undertaken to improve the protection of the water level, by placing, in front of the two existing wharves, a new dam and a wharf control destined to completely protect the port from storms coming from the East. These studies have led to the construction, at the foot of the Rock of Gibraltar, of a colossal work of 352 meters long with a weight of 160,000 tons. This work has the particularity of being semi-floating for the preservation of the marine flora and fauna. The construction has been towed until the Principality of Monaco and it is moored at the foot of the rocks. Then, it was completed with a counter wharf with a length of 145 meters. The new dam allows also the accommodation of large cruise ships (up to 300 meter long). This new outer harbor has also allowed the completion of a supplementary basin for large pleasure boats hosting, about twenty yachts ranging from 35 to 60 meters and two of 100 meters, in front of the new Yacht Club, a decisively modern building, assigned to Mr. N. Foster, currently under construction. The total capacity of the Hercules Port thus comes raised to 700 berths. Within the old port, S.A.S II Prince Albert II, that has followed the work started by his father, has decided to built a complete rearrangement of the water level that make the Port of Monaco the most modern and practical tourist harbor from the Western Mediterranean. This rearrangement will allow the accommodation of pleasure ships and grand luxury of large sizes, keeping account of the development of very large pleasure ships.
